I did this piece before I owned a computer (gasp!). It was
done simply with colored pencils, in a cartoony, light-hearted
style. The extreme close-up of the face, while not a self-portrait,
was an embodiment of the overwhelming flood of emotion I felt
the moment my daughter entered this world. Fatigue, joy, love,
fear, pride, thankfulness, worry, all spinning around in my
head as that little crying bundle reflected in my swollen
eyes. Judging from the feedback from other parents upon receiving
the announcement, I hit the mark with the facial expression.
